Date published: 07 November 2013

Rochdale DJ Gareth Loynes will be celebrating ten years as a resident DJ at Yates, Rochdale. Gareth started as a DJ there on 8 November 2003 when the pub was The Litten Tree.

Gareth, who began his career as a DJ at the age of 16 said: “I’ve been there a long time but I just love it and I am excited about the anniversary.”

Gareth began as a DJ twenty years ago, when during his glass collecting shift at a local pub, he was asked to play a song. Once he felt that buzz he knew that is what he wanted to do. “Everyone was going crazy and that is when I decided that this is what I want to do and that was twenty years ago.”

Offered the job in 2003, Gareth was asked if he “fancied a new challenge” by then managers of The Litten Tree. He accepted the challenge and was offered the job after one night of being DJ.

Gareth DJs for Yates during the weekends. When speaking about the venue that he has worked in for so long he said: “Everyone is just so friendly. The staff are so good, the manager is good and the customers have become my friends. I love it.

“The customers are brilliant and know what I play and don’t mither me for anything.”

Now 35, Gareth has many memories from his time as a DJ and recalls the incident that occurred outside of The Litten Tree Pub when a car drove into pedestrians. He said: “I was there when that happened. It was like something from the Grand Theft Auto games, that’s they only way I can describe it.”

Gareth’s manager, Paul Heneghan who has worked with Gareth for seven years said: “He is a good DJ who has been here for ten years. He is here every Friday and Saturday without fail and he hasn’t failed us yet. He never lets us down and he is well and truly a Rochdalian through and through.”

To celebrate his ten year anniversary, Gareth will be doing what he does best and that is working. He said: “I would rather be working so everyone can enjoy it. People complain when I am not working so I would rather be doing that.”
