Council committed to improving Memorial Gardens

Friends of Broadfield Park have expressed concerns about proposed changes to the Memorial Gardens. However, Rochdale Council has given an assurance that it is committed to improving the quality of the gardens.

A council spokesman said: “We are committed to improving the quality of the Memorial Gardens and over the past few years we have carried out a wide variety of work to enhance the area. This work was recently recognised with a prestigious Green Flag award.

“We now preparing proposals to enhance the quality of the landscaping within the gardens and it is hoped that these improvements will be implemented early next year.”

Completed works within the Memorial Gardens include:

  • A new footpath at the northern end of the gardens to create a more convenient link to Hopwood Hall College 
  • Restoration to the fountain 
  • Reinstatement of the original tree planting scheme 
  • Removal of selected trees to restore the ‘Axis of Remembrance’ that runs from the Memorial on the Town Hall entrance (Boer War), the Cenotaph (Great War) and the Memorial Gardens (Second World War)
