Beech House School

Date published: 05 November 2013

We are delighted to report that Beech House School Art Dept achieved another successful year in the Independent Schools’ Association (NW) Art Competition, which took place at Hillcrest School, Stockport.

This year’s success was with two of our students:

  • Bethan Sowerby won Second Prize in ISA KS4/5 Photographic competition
  • Molly Corrigan won Second Prize in the ISA KS4 individual 2D Art competition.

Congratulations to them both.

Year 9 were given a presentation by the Community Safety Team. They were shown a video about car crime and took part in a workshop about keeping safe whilst in a car. Year 6 visited the Crucial Crew event in Rochdale. They were split into small groups and had to take part in a series of presentations given by the railway police, fire brigade, road safety team and Greater Manchester buses. In addition, they were given advice about keeping safe whilst using the internet.

The under 11’s girls football team played in their first ever matches in a friendly tournament held at St John’s. They played really well and I am sure with more practice will only improve. In their next competition they finished joint sixth having drawn two and lost two. Players of the day for both events were Elana El-Hage, Hira Iqbal and Rebecca Burnett.

The under 11 boys football played in a tournament at Heywood. They started slowly but gradually improved as the event went on. They suffered narrow 0-1 defeats in all but one of their matches. Player of the day was Deazel Fairhurst.

The under 9 football and netball teams played their first matches of the season against Hipperholme Grammar School. The boys tried hard but it was clear that the opposition had played more often together and they lost 0-6. Player of the day was Thomas Stott. In netball, the match moved from end to end quite quickly with both teams having several chances to score. However it was the home team who secured a narrow victory by 3 goals to 1. Player of the day was Gabrielle El-Hage.

The under 13 netball team continued with their friendly season with a match against Wardle. Both teams started well and the game flowed quickly, but it was Wardle who took an early lead. Beech House defended really well and prevented Wardle from scoring on many occasions. However, Wardle’s experience began to tell and they scored several goals in quick succession. Beech House did manage to gain a consolation goal as the game finished 1-6. Players of the day were Emily Kershaw and Natalie El-Hage.

The under 11 rugby team narrowly missed out on qualifying for the borough finals recently. They started well and gained a 2-1 victory over Broadfield, They were well beaten in their next couple of matches but finished the tournament with a 3-1 win against Middleton Parish. Player of the day was Christopher Kershaw.
