HMRPCT tops alcohol treatment poll

Date published: 14 April 2008

Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Primary Care Trust (HMRPCT) has been highlighted as the top performing PCT in the region for providing care to alcohol sufferers.
In a survey conducted by alcohol misuse agency Alcohol Concern, HMRPCT had 153 per cent of dependent drinkers currently in treatment, more than any other North West PCT.

Dr Michelle Loughlin, consultant in public health at the PCT, commented: “Alcohol misuse is something we take very seriously in our Borough and currently treatment is available for all Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale residents. This can be as simple as advice for relatives or a full detoxification for people who are completely dependant on alcohol. Treatment is available in a variety of locations such as GP surgeries, hospital wards and specialist treatment centres.”

The PCT works closely with Rochdale Borough Council and local partners to develop the Borough’s alcohol strategy.

Jenny Lovett from Rochdale Borough Council’s Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT), added: “Reducing the harm caused by drugs and alcohol is a priority for the borough’s Pride of Place Partnership and we have implemented an alcohol strategy that looks at the key issues surrounding alcohol. In partnership with the PCT, we have recently developed a Local Area Agreement Stretch target that will help provide a full range of treatment services to an even larger population of harmful and hazardous drinkers across the Borough.”
