Castleton Youth Group up and running again

Date published: 01 November 2013

Castleton Youth Group will be up and running again after half term week following restructuring. The group will start again on Friday 8 November between 7.00pm and 9.00pm at St Martin's Church for children aged between 11 and 18.

The group, which has run previously, stopped due to a lack of volunteers but will now be starting again after demand in the area.

David Murphy, team leader for the group, said: “We were being bombarded by kids asking when it was going to start again so it is being done by popular demand.”

Castleton Youth Group previously had over 60 children attend. Now, the group has been merged with a youth group from St Gabriel’s Church.

David added: “St Gabriel’s underwent some admin changes so we decided to merge the two groups together.”

The work of the youth group relies on the support of local volunteers. “We have lots of people saying that they want to get involved and we have had a good response to the volunteering side,” said David.

The aim of the group is to give young people a safe environment to be in on a Friday evening to meet friends, play games and activities whilst having a good time.

Activities include movie nights, ice breaker activities, team building and things the children involved want to do.

“It is more about what the kids want to do and we just support them really,” added David.

The group also has a pool/snooker table, table tennis, Nintendo Wii, indoor football and a  new tuck shop.

As the group continues to develop it is hoped that fundraising events will be held to raise money for trips out, additional activities and support.

“Especially at this time of year, these clubs give young people somewhere they can go which is safe to be with their friends instead of being out in the streets,” said David.

The entrance fee is £1.
