Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival officially open

Date published: 25 October 2013

Rochdale's first Literature and Ideas Festival kicked off today (Friday 25 October) and was officially opened by Mayor Peter Rush.

It is hoped the festival, which takes place all weekend at Rochdale Central Library, becomes an annual event in the borough.

Mayor Rush said: "This event follows in a long line of events that supports culture. The festival has been put together to show what Rochdale has to offer.

“At a time when Rochdale is inviting the Fijian Rugby team, this event can bring people together. Rochdale has a lot to show off with the new and up coming tram and with this beautiful building.

“Everything is coming together and we will be a happy borough again.

"Thank you to the staff and volunteers here today and thank you for supporting creativity in the borough."

Compere for the festival, local writer Norman Warwick, said: "A big welcome to the first Rochdale Literature and Ideas festival.

“This is the first event and things you see today will follow into things for next year’s event and hopefully an event the year after."

The festival includes a variety of activities including book signings; meet the author sessions, dance, music and theatre performance as well as workshops for people of all ages.

The festival runs all weekend: www.rochdaleliteraturefestival.co.uk
