GMP’s mobile phone app that provides people with information based on their location has received a prestigious innovation award.
The iPhone and Android app was developed by the Force’s Corporate Communications team and has had almost 20,000 downloads since the launch in January this year.
The app provides information about the nearest local police station and policing team, as well as details of appeals, wanted and missing people based on geolocation data. Web developers Dave Baxter and Robert Birkett have been the driving force behind the app.
Deputy Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said: “The app is a really useful development that gives our communities even greater access to information. We have had some great feedback and are now looking at how we can develop it further and add new functions.”
The GMP app won the Innovation Award at the UK Social Media Communications Awards in London on Thursday 24 October. It was the only public sector development shortlisted in the category.
