Poems from St. John’s, part of the Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival

Date published: 24 October 2013

As part of the Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival to be held on Saturday and Sunday, 26 and 27 October, children from our school will be taking part in events over the two days.

Children from classes Crown and Pankhurst will be involved in events over the weekend.

The event organisers involved with Pankhurst forwarded this comment about the children: “Your Y4 have been an absolute pleasure to work with. Their writing about Rochdale has been both imaginative and joyful, the behaviour and attitude have been excellent and they've really worked hard. It would be lovely if they got to perform in front of another class or in assembly for example - so that their work is recognised for those who can't come to the library."

'We Love Rochdale' the poem they created:

We love Rochdale Bula!

Rochdale wakes up with the roar of a tiger, a zoo of cars, a supermarket of friends.

Chitter chatter, chitter chatter, fun never ends.

At night Rochdale walks quietly like a mouse, a secret maze of tunnels, a forest of flowers, sleeping.

Feels like a wool path, a soft bed, a calm bath, tastes like honey.

Open your eyes.

Rochdale walks like an earthquake, talks with a deep voice, runs like motorbikes, smells like fresh air.

Rochdale tastes like an exotic fruit smoothie.

And Rochdale laughs like you've just told a funny joke, and everyone laughs together.

We love Rochdale Bula!

Welcome Fiji the other poem they created to dance with:

Girl 1: I wish I could see all the islands

There's three hundred and thirty three

I wish I could swim with the dolphins

in the clean and gentle sea

Boy 1: I wish I could touch the white sand

and the forests and the stars

I wish I could see the waves.

Is your sea different from ours?

Boy 2: I wish I could see the fishing nets

Is your fishing the same as mine?

I wish we could have a crab race

I bet we'd have a good time!

Girl 2: I wish I could build a boat

and watch it soar and sing

I wish I could go surfing

I'd just love everything!

I wish I could dance in a tropical rainstorm

With the heat and the rain and the noise

I wish I could meet your children

I promise I'll share all my toys!

Boy 2: And if England get knocked out

I wish I could see you win

the Rugby LegueWorld Cup

Coz in Rochdale we love Fiji

You get the big 'thumbs up'!

Girl 2: Fiji- Welcome to Rochdale!

all: Bula!
