Bible Sunday at St Andrew's

Date published: 22 October 2013

Thanks to an article by Michael in the current issue of 'The Fisherman', our church magazine, we can look at what's behind Bible Sunday.

Bible Sunday at St Andrew's is this coming Sunday (October 27) which we will celebrate with our Sung Eucharist, starting as usual at 9.30am.

Each year the Bible Society asks churches to hold Bible Sunday services in support of their work to bring bibles to those parts of the world where they are scarce or difficult to get hold of.

This year the focus is on China where attendance at Christian worship is experiencing almost explosive growth.

It is estimated that, despite restrictions on religious activity, a million people in that vast country have converted to Christianity in the last year and that more people now attend Sunday worship in China than in the whole of Europe.

We will be praying for those people tomorrow and also examining our own relationships with the Bible, which is a plug for Bible Study, each Tuesday in the vicarage, starting at 7.30pm.

The parish rota this week is: lay assistants, C Longhurst, J Halstead; readers, G Barlow, S Topham; Intercessions, R Polley; sidespersons, E Burrow, J Ainsworth.

Both St Andrew's Church and St Andrew's CE Primary School donated their harvest food collections to the Rochdale Foodbank.

The total weight of food collected by church and school was 264kg which will provide food for three days for 18 people to bring relief to families and individuals in crisis.

A reminder that our annual Autumn Fair will be held in St Andrew's School on Saturday, November 9 (11am to 1pm) and that our Wider Welcome official opening weekend has been put back a fortnight and will now take place on December 14 and 15.

Looking further ahead, dates of Christmas services are as follows: Sunday, December 22, carol service (6pm); Christmas Eve, Crib and Christingle (4pm); Midnight Eucharist (11pm); Christmas Day, Family Eucharist (9.30am).
