EU red tape shock

A report showing that EU red tape is costing every British household more than £1,000 a year has been highlighted by local MEP Paul Nuttall.

"Well done to the think tank Open Europe for doing the homework on these figures which are truly shocking.

"Their research shows that the mostly costly 100 rules add £27.4billion to the cost of our economy, something which the Brussels eurocrats omit to mention in their propaganda material," said Mr Nuttall, UKIP deputy leader.

"Without laws such as the working time regulations, which cost £4.1billion a year, the Government could slash the Budget deficit.

"It is believed that the most expensive regulation, which involves new capital rules for banks due to come into force in January, will cost the British economy a staggering £4.5billion a year.

"Other burdensome regulations include the temporary agency workers directive, costing £2billion a year, and the energy performance of buildings directive, with a recurring cost of £1.5billion a year.

"Brussels rules and regulations are crippling British business, which is particularly devastating at this time when we need to be creating jobs not hampering them," said Mr Nuttall.

"David Cameron can pontificate all he wants about renegotiation. It won't happen and the only answer is to leave the European Union," he added.
