Sudden junction update

Date published: 14 April 2008

The traffic lights at the junction where Manchester Road meets Edinburgh Way and Roch Valley Way have now been switched on and the junction is fully open. The phasing of the signals will be adjusted as necessary over the coming weeks to achieve the optimum operation for the best possible traffic flow.

Cotton Lane (the link road between Manchester Road and Manchester Old Road) has now been permanently reduced to one lane, and is operating as a one way system. Vehicles can no longer enter Manchester Old Road via this road - you must enter via the new access at the junction where Manchester Road meets Roch Valley Way and Edinburgh Way. The footpath closure on Cotton Lane remains in place.

The roundabout where Bolton Road meets Silk Street and Manchester Road will be reduced in size to allow for traffic to be diverted during the construction of the new traffic islands around the junction.

A lane closure is necessary on Silk Street to allow for the reconstruction of the footpaths. The signals for the puffin crossing are currently being installed, and the crossing will be operational once United Utilities have provided an electricity supply.

A temporary footpath diversion has been set up on Bolton Road to allow for the re-alignment of the bus layby. The existing bus stop has been closed during this work - you are advised to use the temporary bus stop which has been set up approximately 75m west (towards Heywood).

The section of Manchester Road between the two roundabouts is reduced to one lane westbound at all times. This is to facilitate the reconstruction of the central reserve. This will be opened up to two lanes from Wednesday 16th April, when the Silk Street / Bolton Road / Manchester Road roundabout is reduced in size.

A temporary footpath diversion has been set up while the retaining wall is being reconstructed and the bus lane is being completed, next to the Windmill pub. The existing bus stop will be relocated to its new position opposite Tesco.

Off peak lane closures are necessary on both sides of Edinburgh Way, to lay the anti-skid finishing on the approaches to the new crossing. This work has unfortunately been delayed due to bad weather conditions.
