Youth groups help the homeless during Eid

Date published: 21 October 2013

Hamer Youth Group and Subsit Youth Group celebrated Eid on Wednesday 16 October with the homeless who live in sheltered accommodation.

Supported by a community organiser, the groups shared south eastern delicacies with people in the homeless shelter.

Chairperson of Hamer Youth Group, Nadia Shahid said: “Small steps such as these are valuable in promoting togetherness regardless of age or faith. It is brilliant to see all ages come together to celebrate and show their generosity.”

A spokesperson for Subsist Youth Group added: “Subsist's aim is to get young people involved in various projects and tackle stereotypes that may be attached to youngsters.

"To see such a turnout and everyone enjoying themselves is rewarding in itself and has made my Eid.”

Muslims worldwide participated in Eid-Al-Adha celebrations on Wednesday 16 October. A vital part of Islam is to give to the less privileged and this is what encouraged the groups to celebrate Eid with the shelter.

Organisers of the event said the day was a success, and the homeless were grateful and amazed at the community generosity.

The community organiser involved said: “I look forward to further events. Being part of such events is a blessing and I will continue to promote them.”
