Mayor Rush supports Heywood Angling Society

Date published: 20 October 2013

Mayor Peter Rush presented members of the junior angling squad from the Heywood and District Angling Society with new jackets and shirts yesterday (Saturday 19 October), provided by Darren and Jane Grindrod from Daisy Chain, Heywood at Mutual Mills Complex.

Mayor Rush said: "This is something which is very close to my heart and I am really pleased that this is happening in Heywood. It is great to see all of these young people getting involved. It is giving young people something to do and
giving them a hobby."

As well as the presentation, the society was taking part in the Angling Trust Talent Pathway. The pathway is a series of regional assessments that helps to find people for the England Junior Squad.

Barry Hargreaves, secretary of the society, said: "It is a really good and transparent assessment."

People taking part are assessed on theory and practical elements. The assessments typically involve 30-40 people, which is then narrowed down to 10 on the final day.

"The assessments help us see who has the gift for the England squad,” added Barry.

Treasurer of the society, Jim Ridley said: "We want to thank Mayor Rush, as well as Darren and Jane for their continued support and we look forward to their future support. Thank you to everyone who has come today."
