Lancashire and Cheshire Woodcarvers showcase

Date published: 20 October 2013

Lancashire and Cheshire Woodcarvers held a showcase event yesterday (Saturday 19 October) to show people the work they do and to try and encourage people to take up the craft.

Melanie Windle from Lancashire and Cheshire Woodcarvers said: "We want people to see what they can do because anyone can do it and to show people that this craft is still on-going."

The event, held at Spotland Methodist Church, showcased a variety of woodcarvings from animal carvings to walking sticks and children's ornaments.

Mayor Peter Rush attended the event and said: "It is my pleasure to come to Spotland Methodist, a church where I have many memories, to see these crafts.

"I am pleased to see that crafts are still part of our culture in the borough and hope everyone keeps up the good tradition."

Gillian Smith, who has been carving for ten years, said: "It's not too difficult once you get going."

Demonstrations also took place with visitors to the event being able to have a go at carving.

Ron McConnell, who gave your reporter a small carving lesson, said: "I've been doing it for two years and couldn’t really do anything when I first started. The dog's head which I'm carving now will take about six months but different
things take different times."

The event is held every year by the group.

Melanie added: "We sometimes get members from these events, which is good, and it gives the group members a chance to show off what they can do."

The Lancashire and Cheshire Woodcarvers meet every third Saturday of the month at Spotland Methodist Church between 9am and 3:15pm and meet every Thursday during term time for workshops between 9am and 3pm.
