Lower Falinge regeneration work underway

Date published: 18 October 2013

Work to redevelop the Redcross Street and Waterhouse Street area of Falinge is under way. Demolition work has started on two existing flat blocks, Cartmel and Frieston.

The blocks of flats are being removed as part of regeneration plans for the area.

The scheme also makes use of the adjacent disused pub site, formerly the Abbey Inn.

The site will see 30 new family homes and bungalows developed with the contemporary new homes - designed by OMI Architects.

This regeneration will see the introduction of new housing along the historic Toad Lane and will be a huge transformation of an area which is currently of poor visual quality.

In addition, the landscaping design will see the introduction of greenery in an area of the neighborhood which previously had very little good quality amenity space.

Local firm Casey has been appointed by Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) to carry out the construction work.

Clare Tostevin, RBH Head of Strategy and Regeneration, said: “The removal of the Cartmel and Frieston blocks is a big change for Lower Falinge and this redevelopment sends out a very positive message about the future of this neighborhood.

"The well designed and warm new homes will be at the heart of the local community, and will provide a more diverse range of home options in an area that currently only provides one and three bedroom flats.”
