St. Cuthbert’s RC Business and Enterprise College

Date published: 11 September 2013

Welcome back to everyone and a very special welcome to our new Year 7 learners.
Congratulations to our pupils who have just left, they achieved the best ever GCSE results in the school’s history, with 75% achieving 5 or more grades at A*-C. We wish the present Year 11 the best of luck and have high hopes that they will go on to achieve an even higher standard of success.

Well done to all pupils who used I am learning last year. St Cuthbert’s came top in the national competition. Two pupils scooped the Gold and Bronze prizes, they were Benjamin Hunt winning the overall competition who won a PlayStation 3 and Horacio De Assuncao who came 3rd and has chosen £100 of Play Station games. Students did approximately 35% Maths and 35% English work with the remainder being split amongst other subject areas, there was also an improvement in correct answers meaning that pupils average scores also increased.

Four Year 10 students were awarded places at Salters' Chemistry Camps over the summer. Katie Davies, Alex Shaw and Jonathan Smith travelled to York University and Amy Bullock visited Cambridge University. The students spent three days and two nights at their Host University, staying in the University Halls of Residence, and using the laboratories. They carried out new, exciting experiments, and had the chance to delve into areas of chemistry that are not usually covered at school. Well done on all your hard work.

Following on from the outstanding success last year at the World Martial Arts Championships where St Cuthbert's Year 10 pupil Sian Hall achieved 2 golds, 2 silvers and a bronze, Sian has once again been selected to represent Great Britain at this year’s championships. Sian will travel to Italy in October and compete in 12 different categories with hopes high for further success. Everyone at St. Cuthbert's wishes her all the best of luck and we are looking forward to her bringing back more medals.

Our theme for this week is Racial Justice and our Enterprise capability is Creativity.

Our Saint of the Week was Saint Ambrose Barlow, a local saint to us here in the North West. Born in Chorlton in 1585, St Ambrose Barlow listened to God’s call and became a Catholic priest at a time in history when it was very dangerous. Everyday he risked his life as as a priest and had to celebrate Mass and carry out his duties as a priest in secret, always with the risk of being arrested.
