GMP prepares for Manchester derby

Date published: 10 September 2013

Greater Manchester Police is gearing up for the much-anticipated Manchester derby.

The Force will police the derby match between Manchester City and Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium which will kick off at 4pm on Sunday 22 September 2013.

Superintendent Stuart Ellison said: "The derby match always attracts tens of thousands of fans and we are keen to make sure it is a safe and enjoyable occasion for both sets of supporters.

"We have been working closely with both clubs for several weeks to maximise safety and ensure there is a fantastic family atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

"The majority of fans in recent derby matches have behaved impeccably. They simply want to enjoy the game and I applaud their behaviour. Incidents of criminality and anti-social behaviour at football games are becoming the exception and this is testament to the behaviour of genuine fans in attendance.

"We are never complacent however and we are prepared for any challenges that may arise and will have officers ready to deal with any incidents of disorder on the day.

"Greater Manchester Police is extremely experienced at policing big fixtures such as this and we do have a significant operation in place, both on the ground and at key locations across Greater Manchester, to ensure the safety of the public.

"We want people to come into the city, enjoy the match and the atmosphere and I would ask that they take responsibility for themselves and drink responsibly."

Anyone caught with alcohol on the streets within the alcohol exclusion zone, which covers Manchester City Centre and the vicinity of the Etihad Stadium, will have it confiscated. In addition, anyone arriving at the stadium under the influence of excess alcohol will be refused entry.

Superintendent Stuart Ellison continued: "We are well aware that competitive tension and increased alcohol consumption can sometimes provoke abuse and violence at home.

"There will be specialist officers on duty to support victims of domestic abuse. We would encourage anyone who is a victim to contact us as full support and help is available to those in need from both GMP and our partner agencies."
