Manchester’s Blood Bikes

Date published: 14 August 2013

All over the country bikers set out on the road to do more than just enjoy the ride – they’re providing a service which is vital to the nation’s health.

The Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes is an organisation set up to get the blood flowing around the nation – which is why we need good hearts like those who volunteer for the service!

Blood Bikes organises and carries out the transportation of much-needed supplies between the UK’s hospitals, clinics and other health institutions.

As well as the blood from which it gets its name, Blood Bikes also ferries scans, X-rays and even breast milk from A to B all over the country.

The number of groups within the UK has grown to reach over 85% of the population and has also set up in some regions of Ireland.

Most importantly, the service provided by Blood Bikes continues thanks to the hard work put in by its volunteers; it relies on donations of time and money from the generous general public.

The latest addition to this good cause comes from Manchester Blood Bikes, who had the idea of forming when they saw an ad on TV which depicted the trials and tribulations of one such rider, tasked with ferrying those urgently-needed supplies around their region at Christmas time.

Last January, North West Blood Bikes became an official group, registering their charity and reaching out to local charities to see if they could source a couple of bikes from which to start their operations – filling the urgent requirement for such a charitable cause in Manchester and the North West of England which they spotted. NWBB received kind donations of bikes from the David Schofield Foundation Trust and from motorbike insurance firm Carole Nash.

Having also procured a 4x4 for emergencies, the group was ready to roll out their invaluable service with its debut ride last summer from Manchester to Tameside with an urgent blood delivery.

As you’d expect from a charity which is so dedicated to providing such an important service to its local area, funding its on-going operations doesn’t come cheap – which is why you can expect to see members of the Manchester Blood Bike team at Carole Nash-sponsored events throughout the year, raising awareness of their work and taking donations.
