Date published: 05 August 2013

Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, Sir Peter Fahy and local councillors visited the Golden Mosque in Spotland to view the new building.

Sir Peter commented: “This is a beautiful building with a very sacred atmosphere. I received a very warm welcome. He concluded “it was a real pleasure to feel the strength of the community here.”

Councillor Sultan Ali, the Rochdale Council cabinet portfolio holder for strengthening community attended, he commented: “The Golden Mosque is a wonderful example of a modern place of worship. The developer has taken into account all the issues of energy efficiency and visual impact as well as other environmental factors.”

Local councillors Surinder and Cecile Biant said: “We both wish to thank the mosque committee for the invitation. It was a privilege to attend and join the community as they opened their fast. We enjoyed the experience and very much appreciate the warm welcome received during the evening.”

The mosque, which has received awards for the construction of the building, is involved in the foodbank scheme, has a youth club running every week and has held open days for the community.

Tahir Mahmood, the President of the mosque said: “It’s the holy month of Ramadan. We wanted our guests to view the new building and to join us as we open our fasts."

He added: “It is vital, as Greater Manchester’s first Mosque, we send a message that the Golden Mosque intend to ensure we open our doors to the wider community.”
