Primary school bands success

Three primary schools, which are taught and conducted by Wardle High School music tutors, performed at the Music For Youth National Festival in Birmingham.

Littleborough Community Primary Wind Band and St James’ C of E Primary Brass Band performed in front of two Musical Mentors in the Adrian Boult Hall, whilst Smithy Bridge Primary Brass Band Performed in the Symphony Hall.

Littleborough Community Primary Wind Band performed first in the morning session in the Adrian Boult Hall. Conducted by Lee Rigg, they performed Let Me Entertain You by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers (arr A Fernie), Clough Top March by Dave Chapman, Summer Romance by Francis Clifford and Toccata in D minor by J S Bach (arr Stanko). The band received good comments from the Musical Mentors. They said of the performance ‘a very dynamic and lively opening number’ and ‘well done you played the entire programme from memory’.

St James’ C of E Primary Brass Band performed in the afternoon also in the Adrian Boult Hall. Conducted by Gwen Smith, they performed Singin’ in the Rain by Nacio Herb Brown (arr A Fernie), James Bond by John Barry (arr R Stanko), Scooby Doo Meets the Muppets by Various (arr C Mabon) and A Team by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter (arr R Stanko). The band received some great comments with the Musical Mentors saying the ‘programme is full of energy, enthusiasm and musical engagement’ and there was ‘good technical playing from the cornets’.

Lastly, Smithy Bridge Primary Brass Band performed in the afternoon in the Symphony Hall. Conducted by Lee Rigg, they performed Everybody by Anon (arr Stanko), Circus Parade by Ray Woodfield, Fooling About by Gary Young and Toccata in D minor by J S Bach. The band received excellent comments, with the Musical Mentors saying, ‘I can’t believe the true professionalism of this band. Superb!’

The Musical Mentors also said: 'If we close our eyes, we could be listening to a professional band.'

Smithy Bridge Primary Brass Band impressed the musical mentors so much so that they were awarded with the School’s Brass Band’s Certificate of Achievement for Performance Practice.

All three bands are waiting to hear if they have got through to perform at The Royal Albert Hall in London.
