Milnrow Brass band finish third in national championships

Date published: 01 July 2013

Anther successful contest for Milnrow Band at the English National Brass Band Championships which involved 10 of the best bands of this year’s competitions.

Milnrow Band, under Musical Director Mareika Gray, played the morning test piece "Diversions on a Bass Theme" (George Lloyd) at number five, "sandwiched" between two of the best known bands, Black Dyke and Virtuosi Gus.

Milnrow Band clinched second place to Black Dyke in the morning session but the afternoon performance, of an own choice piece, "Music for Battle Creek" was to be taken into consideration. At the conclusion of events Milnrow had dropped a place but were pleased to be awarded overall thirrd position, picking up a cheque and trophy.

Coming behind Black Dyke and Virtuosi Gus, who are two of the biggest names in brass banding, is evidence that Milnrow can hold its own with the best and deserves credit for its performances this year.

The band  also competed in the area contest at Blackpool in March - qualifying to compete in the finals at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Saturday 12 October - winning the famous Grand Shield.

The band will also be competing in the161st British Open Brass Band Championship at the Symphony Hall Birmingham on Saturday 7 September. This is all against the elite bands of the Championship Section of Brass Banding from around the country.
