Where does our food come from?
A piece of university research was published recently, highlighting the fact that primary school children didn’t know where food came from.

The report stated that some children thought cheese was a vegetable and were uncertain about the origin of other food.

Not only have our class 6 children proved that they know where food originates from but have also been finding out more about the food that we consume as a nation. They have gone one step further by working out the distance how far a selection of five fruit and vegetables travel before they arrive on the dinner plate.

The fruit and vegetables in their study travelled 12,000 miles from crop to supermarket and finally the dinner plate. This study has taught the children of the impact on the environment of food produced overseas and the benefits of buying locally produced food.
