Plea for simple recycling system

Date published: 12 January 2008

Littleborough resident John Kay has made a plea to the council for a "simple" recycling system. Mr Kay said: "I think the public would recycle more if we had a simple system for all" - this follows Mr Kay's observation that recycling collection appears haphazard and instructions appear to differ from area to area in town.

He said: "I live just off Halifax Road Littleborough.

"Last Thursday our rubbish was not collected. It was collected today (Monday 7 January) - no explanation or prior warning.

"We are asked to sort cardboard into orange bags and paper into blue bags. Over Christmas, to our surprise, on collection they are both emptied into the same container on the collection truck. So why are we sorting them?

"We have been told that envelopes are not to be recycled because of the gum but I now learn that they are required in Norden amp; Bamford.

"Can we not have one set of simple instructions borough wide."

In reply the council said: "Please be advised that paper and cardboard no longer need to be separated and can be placed in the same bag. New larger bags for both paper and cardboard are being sent out as replacements as and when needed by residents.

Envelopes can now be put in with the paper and cardboard collections."
