Heywood youth on the airwaves

Date published: 21 March 2008

Talented young people from Heywood will be taking control of the airwaves from Friday 28 March through to Tuesday 1 April on 87.7 Fusion FM, where they will play a mixture of their own originally produced music and mainstream tunes as well as voicing their issues and providing information on life as a young person in the town.

The station will be launched at 11am by Jim Dobbin MP.

Since November 2007 Pride Media Association has been working with around 50 young people from across Heywood to develop skills and gain nationally recognised accreditations in Radio Broadcasting, Presenting and Producing. These young people will now have the chance to put these skills into action when they broadcast live across on 87.7FM for 5 days.

Fusion 87.7 FM is an opportunity for local people to tune in and listen to the views, opinions, culture and ideas of young people in their community.

Jonathan Burns, Managing Director, said: "The young people involved in Fusion Radio have worked extremely hard in preparing and producing the station over the past few months. The station promises to be a unique mixture of musical tastes, culture and ideas, and will highlight the positive and creative contribute our young people can make."

Rochdale’s Young Carers are just one of the groups involved in the project who have created their own radio programme. The programme which will be aired during the broadcast gives listeners an insight into the kind of activities, help and support on offer to Young Carers in the borough and gives advice to other young people who may be in similar situations.

Other programmes will feature topics such as Anti-bullying, Drugs and Alcohol Awareness, Mentoring Services and other positive activities available to young people locally.

The Project is funded by The Big Lottery Fund, and supported by BBC Radio Manchester and Rochdale Youth Service.
