Sainsbury's Supermarkets to open new store in Littleborough

Date published: 17 March 2008

Sainsbury's has announced plans to open a new store in Littleborough. The supermarket group has exchanged contracts to acquire the Co-op store in Hare Hill Road. The sale should complete by the end of April and the store will then close for a period of refurbishment and re-branding.

The new 3,000 square foot Sainsbury's Local is expected to open in the early summer and forms part of Sainsbury's growth plans for the North of England.

It will be Sainsbury's first store to open in the Rochdale area.

A spokesman for Sainsbury's said: "The new store will provide customers with an excellent offer of fresh, quality and affordable food in a refurbished, modernised store."

Head of aquisitions Dale Abbott has written to Rochdale Council Chief Executive Roger Ellis saying: "I am pleased to inform you that the new store will create new jobs for the local community and all current Co-op staff will be offered jobs at the new Sainsbury's. They will undergo training during the refurbishment period in preparation for the store opening.

"When it opens, the store will be operated with the greatest respect for local residents and businesses."
