Intelligent lights to improve M62 flow
Date published: 16 January 2008
A congestion busting scheme to improve the flow of traffic at some of the North-West’s busiest motorway junctions is being installed on the M62.
Highly intelligent traffic lights will be installed on the entry slip roads to regulate traffic joining the motorway at Heywood, junction 19, as well as several junctions of the M6 and M56. Sensors in the road monitor the flow of traffic and adjust the timing of the lights to avoid congestion on slip roads.
The system, which is already in use in America, France, Belgium and Holland, is said to improve journey times by up to nine per cent.
