Bookstart Bear Singin’ in the Rain!

Date published: 21 June 2012

Torrential rain didn’t stop the fun as Bookstart celebrated being 20 years old at Springfield Park.

Early Years Library Workers Irene Peachey and Maureen Watson had organised the event and the partnership, working with the Children’s Centres in the borough, ensured that well over 200 Mums, Dads, Grandads, Grandmas, and of course children, attended despite heavy and frequent showers of rain, thoroughly enjoyed the whole event.

Countryside Park Ranger Terry Costigan made sure that everything was ready and waiting for the party – including a party tent to shelter in. The volunteers on the miniature, steam railway went full steam ahead to make the day even more special and the arrival of the fire engine enthralled children and adults alike.

After everyone had enjoyed their picnic there were stories, rhymes and songs galore, giant toys to play with from Terry and the Friends of Springfield Park group, craft activities from the Children’s Centres and a ride on the train to look forward to.

To finish the day on a real high note every child was gifted a free book, rhyme sheet and game to take home, treasure and keep, together with a reminder to join Bookstart Bear Club at their local library.

Irene Peachey said: “Bookstart Bear Club opens up an exciting world as you and your child explore stories, books rhymes and songs together.”

Maureen Watson agreed and added: “Call into your local library to register and collect your child’s free membership pack.”
