Mini Olympics at Littleborough Community Primary School

Children at Littleborough Community Primary School are paying homage to the Olympics by integrating an Olympic parade into their end of term celebratory plans.

The pupils will take part in their own version of the Olympics, in an appropriate twist to their usual sports day. Their hard work will culminate with an awards ceremony, followed by a mini torch-bearing walk on 9 July at 2.00pm.

The celebratory walk will feature all 430 pupils and 60 staff members travelling around the outer perimeter of the school. Leading them will be a student ambassador representing one of six countries, holding their own Olympic torch. The children will represent Greece, France, Spain, Germany, India and China and will be dressed suitably in the colours of their country, adding a worldwide awareness to the celebration.

Accompanying the walk will be a band playing music as the staff and pupils walk around the school.

An Olympic-style sports day will precede this parade.

Jo Fenton, Assistant Head Teacher at the school said: “This will see the whole school split up into three groups: foundation, key stage one and key stage two.

"Each child will be racing on the day to represent both themselves and one of six countries. Each time the pupils complete a race, they will be given a gold, bronze or silver medal. Each group has an overall winner and a country winner.”

As part of the celebratory day, medals will be handed out to winning pupils and plaques will be awarded to the winning countries.

The school hopes that a local dignitary will be able to attend the Olympic celebration and special presentation.
