The groundwork for a greener future
Date published: 14 May 2012
A call has gone out for cash and volunteers to help a local charity change places and change lives in Middleton.
Boarshaw Clough is one of 30 projects around the country to feature in a major campaign by environmental charity Groundwork, which is celebrating its 30th birthday this year.
Operation Groundwork is showcasing the charity’s work in communities across the UK. A key element of the campaign will see the public and businesses invited to donate money or time as volunteers to 30 projects that are making a significant difference to communities.
Boarshaw Clough is a five-acre site of native trees and shrubs, a footpath network, a small river system and lodge. The site comprises a close mown recreational area, water habitat, semi-mature woodland and wildflower areas.
Joanna Fullman of Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale said: “The message behind Operation Groundwork is that local people and organisations have an important role to play in making streets, parks and neighbourhoods greener places to live.
“Groundwork is committed to improving the spaces where people live and here in Middleton we’re delighted that Boarshaw Clough is one of the featured projects in Operation Groundwork.
“Donations of money or time will help us to continue the great work we have been doing to transform places and change communities for the better.
“Extra money will pay for path improvements, new signage and woodland management services while volunteers – either individuals or groups from corporate supporters – will gain new skills, develop team spirit and gain satisfaction from helping to improve their local environment.”
Local resident, David Humphreys, recently volunteered with Groundwork. David added: "It's about time something went on round here. Everything takes place in Langley or Middleton centre. In summer time Boarshaw is beautiful and more activity will hopefully reduce littering and dog fouling."
