Celebrate a summer of sport with a photo

Date published: 18 April 2012

Taking a photograph on your mobile phone or camera could win you a top Panasonic camera and the opportunity to have your image printed and included in a public exhibition. The Royal Photographic Society is launching an online photographic competition with the theme of ‘Celebrate a Summer of Sport’, which has been awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark.

The open, international competition is free to enter.

The website URL is: www.imagecomp.org

The competition aims to encourage people in the UK and across the world to record all aspects of sport and play in their own countries and communities - from informal, fun activities through to local, national and international organised sporting events and competitions.

The competition ‘Celebrate a Summer of Sport’ is split into two stages:

• Stage 1: 1 April - 30 June – on the theme ‘Sport for All’
• Stage 2: 1 July - 30 September – on the theme ‘Spirit of the Games’

Each comes with its own Gold, Silver & Bronze prize Panasonic cameras.

Images can be taken on any device, from mobile phones to digital SLRs and uploaded directly to the competition website: www.imagecomp.org. Participants and the public can see all the images as they are uploaded on their own PC, tablet or smartphone.

Sharron Davies MBE, the Olympic and Commonwealth Medallist commented: “2012 will be an amazing year for sport in the UK. The RPS’s competition will allow people to capture and show off their own community and sporting activities wherever they happen to be. I am looking forward to seeing the entries and the winners of this exciting competition.”

Roy Robertson HonFRPS, President of The Royal Photographic Society, said: “We hope to see sport in all its aspects, showing a diverse range of participants and activities – children kicking a ball in a park, a school sports day or an Olympic swimmer at London 2012 - everything is welcome. The excitement of sport and participation by anyone, anywhere and at whatever level is what we are looking for – and I am sure the images will reflect that.”

The winners from the two competitions will be selected by a respected panel of photographers including Marc Aspland FRPS, chief sports photographer for London’s The Times newspaper; Tom Hunter HonFRPS, Professor of Photography at the London College of Communication; and Bob Martin HonFRPS, multi award-winning sports photographer.

A selection of the entries, alongside the winners, will be printed and shown in two public exhibitions that will be held in Bath – the second most visited City outside of London – throughout August and November, as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad programme. The exhibitions will also be shown online and will be available to tour to other venues in the UK and abroad.
