Are frozen meals the real deal?
Date published: 06 April 2012
A frozen meals service for vulnerable adults which was introduced earlier this year is being hailed a success by the Council, critics disagree.
Rochdale Borough Council took the decision to switch from the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS), who delivered the meals to residents, to a frozen meals service.
Private company Apetito was awarded the contract after a tendering process and began operating in February.
Colin Foster, Director of Adult Care Services at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “We are very encouraged by the early response there has been to the new system.
“The frozen meals service is similar to that offered by many other local authorities and ensures that people receive nutritious meals they can prepare and eat at a time to suit them.”
Critics accuse the Council of leaving vulnerable people without help to cook meals and without the much valued company the WRVS volunteers previously provided.
