Help for Easter holidaymakers as road works lifted
Date published: 28 March 2012
The Highways Agency will help keep traffic moving over the Easter bank holiday weekend by suspending or completing more than 90 percent of its road works.
Around 700 miles of works will be completed before the Easter weekend and 45 miles will be suspended between Thursday 5 April and Tuesday 10 April, providing extra capacity for holiday traffic.
The Agency's Traffic Officers will be patrolling the network to help traffic flow smoothly - and a range of information services will be provided to allow road users to plan their journeys.
Roads Minister, Mike Penning, said: “For the Easter bank holiday weekend, we are completing or lifting more than 90 percent of road works on motorways and trunk roads in England. This means that almost 99 percent of the strategic road network will be clear of road works over the bank holiday period, meaning more lanes will be open and many speed restrictions lifted.
“I advise Easter holidaymakers, day trippers and anyone else planning to travel over the bank holiday weekend, to check weather and travel conditions before setting off. The Highways Agency offers a range of traffic information services to help road users plan Easter holiday journeys, and Traffic Officers will be on patrol throughout the holiday period, to help clear up any incidents as quickly as possible.”
Road works at 272 locations will be completed ahead of the bank holiday. A further 15 sets of road works and lane restrictions will be removed by 06.00am on Thursday 5 April and will not be put back before 00.01am on Tuesday 10 April. At 22 locations, lane restrictions or temporary speed limits will need to remain in place for the safety of drivers and their passengers.
Maundy Thursday evening and Easter Monday afternoon are expected to be the busiest over the bank holiday weekend, especially on the main holiday routes, as people set out and return from short breaks or day trips.
