Transformation of Middleton Technology School begins
Date published: 28 March 2012
Work is now underway on the £9.3million redevelopment of Middleton Technology School.
As part of the project, the school will see the construction of a brand new 3-storey technology block. It will be constructed alongside the school’s recently completed sixth form building and used to deliver specialist subjects such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The remainder of the school’s existing accommodation will be fully refurbished with new 21st century ICT provision installed throughout.
The construction has been carefully phased around the school’s curriculum requirements, with all of the new teaching facilities due to be ready by September 2013. Once staff and pupils have moved in, the remaining demolition and external landscaping works will be completed.
The school is the latest to be transformed as part of Rochdale Borough Council’s £192million BSF Programme, following closely on the heels of the new £4million Darnhill Study Centre in Heywood, where construction started in October.
Cheryl Eastwood, Executive Director at Rochdale Borough Council said:
“This redevelopment is another fantastic step towards improving all 14 of the borough’s secondary schools. Middleton Technology is already graded outstanding by Ofsted and within a short space of time will have outstanding facilities and buildings to match.”
Head Teacher Mrs Allison Crompton CBE said: “The school is delighted that we will enjoy state of the art facilities for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, key subjects for our students’ futures as 21st century citizens and for the nation future as a whole.”
The new and improved facilities are part of the council’s ongoing investment in secondary education across the borough. The investment programme is being delivered by the council’s local education partnership, inspiredspaces Rochdale, and their main building contractor, Carillion.
Claire Butler, inspiredspaces General Manager added: “As the council’s delivery partner, we will be working with the school and Carillion throughout the construction period to provide a range of construction-related curriculum projects and workshops, work experience and careers support. Last month we took a group of Year 11 Construction students to the Billington steel factory in Barnsley so that they could see for themselves the steelwork for their new teaching block being produced.”
