Rochdale house shortlisted in Greenbuild Awards

Date published: 28 March 2012

A Victorian mid-terrace property on Milnrow Road, Rochdale, which has had its existing building fabric improved, has been revealed as a finalist in the Domestic Retrofit category of the Greenbuild Awards.

The inaugural Greenbuild Awards aims to recognise excellence in sustainable buildings, with a particular focus on projects that can illustrate an understanding of the importance of building performance in use.

After weeks of deliberation, the judges have chosen the finalists and the winners will be announced at a celebratory dinner on May 9 at Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry during the Greenbuild Expo 2012.

Designed by Pozzoni architects the Victorian home has been greatly improved. Part of the retrofit is a new extension. This includes dropping quilt insulation between the ground floor timber joists above the basement, injecting cavity wall insulation and replacing the loft hatch with an insulated unit.

Heat loss has been reduced and an air permeability of 6.3m3/(h.m2) from 15.22m3/(h.m2) has been achieved. Other work carried out includes painting the south-facing elevation to absorb radiant heat and replacing kitchen and bathroom fittings to reduce water consumption.

The Greenbuild Award judges for the building categories are Liz Reason of the Green Gauge Trust, Kerry Mashford from the Technology Strategy Board and Paul Ruyssevelt from Ruyssevelt Consulting. The University of Salford is judging the Retrofit product category.

Liz Reason said: “The importance of monitoring and evaluating the energy performance of our buildings is at last being understood. We can see real benefits from these competition entries – fantastic learning of what works and what doesn’t – to make subsequent projects so much better for others in the industry. Bring it on!”
