Oulder Hill Community School

School closes for the Easter Holidays on Friday 30 March and re-opens on Monday 16 April at the usual time. We would like to wish everyone a happy and relaxing break.

As you will no doubt be aware, Oulder Hill students are currently competing to a very high standard in the Rochdale Festival of Performing Arts. As the festival has now drawn to a close we are delighted to report even more success. In the vocal solos for Year 9 and under, Emma Down achieved Honours and finished first. Megan Mitchell and Eve Walton were also Highly Commended. In the Year 11 and under category, Hannah Clegg and Rachel Brierley were highly commended and finished first and second respectively – an amazing achievement. Ellie Wensley, Becky Moore, Connor Cunningham, Cody Parfitt, Dominic Normanton, Ashley Mohan and Amber Heaviside were also all highly commended. Ms Tilney said “we looked and sounded so good” – it was a proud evening for Oulder Hill and many thanks are due to Steph Ball our vocal teacher as well as our students. Finally, the Wind Band and Brass Group were both commended for their performances. Congratulations to everyone involved for all your hard work and dedication.

Our Year 11 Catering students would like to thank the parents and staff who came to their meal at The Cottons restaurant last week, to celebrate and to sample the results of two years hard work. Everyone was amazed at the quality and presentation of the dishes on offer, and had a “fantastic” evening. Special thanks must go to Mrs Brierley and chef Brian Yates, for training and supporting out chefs of the future over the past 2 years, and of course thanks to our students for making the evening so special.

Commiserations to our Year 10 football team, whose epic cup run was ended by Cardinal Langley in a very close contest last week. Confidence was high coming into this game, having knocked out cup favourites Saint Cuthberts in round one. The lads were also buoyed by a hard fought win over Kingsway Park in the previous round. Although narrowly beaten by 3 goals to 2 by one of the best sides in Rochdale, the lads rightly left the field with their heads held high. Man of the match was Connor Taberner, who was strong in his first game, missed very few tackles and headers and tried to play a passing game when he had the ball. Other notable performances were Abdul Shahid, who never stopped running, Joe Whitworth, who according to Mr Noon was “everywhere” and also Alex Maughan, who battled through illness.
Next, some more fantastic news about our netball teams, who played against Middleton Technology College last week. Year 7 won by 15 points to nil – player of the match was Zara Ahmed; Year 8 won a close match by 8 points to 6 – player of the match was Mio Griffiths; finally, Year 9 won a high-scoring game by 22 points to 9 – player of the match was Melissa Chambers. As always our students were fantastic, so well done to all.

Finally, as many of you will know, we run the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme at both Bronze and Silver levels. Last weekend, all 25 Bronze students (currently in Year 9) went on their walk. At 8.00am, they left Saddleworth and walked the hills around Dovestone reservoir, totalling about 8 miles. The students were an absolute credit to the school considering the weather – Mrs Corlett said “there was not a whinge about being there”. We look forward to hearing about their next expedition.
