A reminder to all parents and carers that school closes for the Easter Holidays on Friday 30 March and reopens on Monday 16 April at the usual time.

Thank you to all parents and carers of Year 11 students who came to parents’ evening on Thursday to support your children at the important time in their education.

On Friday 9 March, the Jason King World War One workshop came to Oulder Hill. In the morning, Year 9 students participated in interactive workshops in which they could try on uniforms and gas marks from the Great War and examine artifacts and ephemera from allied and enemy trenches and from the home front. Year 9 students are currently studying World War One in History with some cross-curricular work in English and relished the opportunity to question and explore the history of the objects and to experience empathy for the characters involved. In the afternoon, it was the turn of the Year 7 and 8 “Humanities Stars” to take part in the workshop as a reward for their hard work. All students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and really felt that History had been brought to life in a way that was relevant and worthwhile for them. Danielle Beasley in Year 9 said “It was really good – it was fun to learn about new things and the artifacts. It was funny when we tried the costumes on.” Another student added “It was brilliant! I liked how he showed us his collection. It really interested me”.

Next, some pleasing news about our Year 10 football team. Last week, our lads beat Kingsway Park by 4 goals to 1 – although this scoreline looks like it was a convincing victory, the game was actually much closer, with the boys having to dig deep and show resilience and a strong team spirit to come out victorious. We dominated the game in the early stages, keeping the ball but not producing any goal scoring opportunities. This was until Alex Maughan slotted home after the ball was pulled back to him. The second shortly followed with Roger Antonio, on his debut, showing great feet inside the box to beat two defenders and square the ball to a thankful Abdul Shahid to tap in from 6 yards. In the second half, the opposition got back into the game when their centre forward was left unmarked in the box to smash the ball past James Haigh, who had with no chance of making a save. Things could have further deteriorated shortly after, when they sprung the offside trap - however James was on hand to make an excellent save. The rebound fell to a Kingsway Park player only for him to smash it off the underside of the bar. Oulder Hill then went down to the opposite end and settled the nerves with a fantastic half volley from Joe Whitworth. He struck the ball sweetly over the keeper’s head after some fantastic work by Sam Hirst. The game was put to bed by Alex Maughan, who secured the 3 points and a well deserved brace, with a smart finish after good work once again by Abdul Shahid. Well done lads.

Well done to our Key Stage 3 trampolining team, who achieved a fantastic second place in the whole of Rochdale in last week’s competition. The team in full was Alex Bagshaw, Georgina Butterworth, Lucy Moore, Courtney Hubbard and Jenna Spencer. A special mention must go to Alex Bagshaw, who was the overall winner, coming first in the whole of Rochdale. Fantastic news – well done.

Our Year 7 and 9 netball teams also deserve a special mention for some fabulous victories. Both teams played matches against Matthew Moss last week: the Year 7 team won by 13 points to nil and the Year 9 girls won by a phenomenal 22 points to 1. players of the match were Jenna Oldham and Sian Hegarty respectively. Well done girls.
