Budding accountants play business game

Date published: 19 March 2012

A group of accounting students from Hopwood Hall College was visited by experts from the Chartered Institute of Management Accounting (CIMA), who devised a fun and informative game to help them learn about business.

Joanne Wood and Chris Hogan from CIMA gave a brief presentation about the organisation and then told the students about a special business game they had devised for them.

Firstly, tutors put the 30 students into groups with a mix of Level 2 and Level 3 students in each group. Then, they were given a case study of a business that had problems and had 20 minutes to work together and come up with at least 3 recommendations to improve the profitability of the company as a whole.

The groups of students then had to present their findings to the other groups.

The winning group was made up of students David Hilton, Kadie Wrigley, Holly Harris and Tariq Javed.

A College spokesperson, said: "The groups all enjoyed the activity and felt that they had improved their communication, listening and presenting skills; their college tutors try to give them lots of experience of real-life situations, just like this, to help them to put their classroom learning into context.

"The game gave them an insight into what could be expected of them if they choose to go on to study a CIMA course once they have completed their AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) studies. As CIMA is an internationally recognised qualification, the learners could see the relevance to them and it also gave them something they could include on their CVs."
