A man was hit over the head with a weapon and tied up in the street in Middleton.
At about 2.00am on Saturday 10 March, the 41-year-old man was approached by a number of men on Hollin Lane, and struck from behind with the object.
The blow rendered him unconscious, and the offenders continued to reign blows upon him.
They then tied him up and dragged him to nearby Talbot Street.
The victim remained there unconscious until 5.30am.
He has been to hospital for treatment.
The offenders are described as being a group of about four or five men.
Detective Constable Claire Rawcliffe said: "This was a horrendous ordeal for the victim, who was subjected to an unnecessary level of violence.
"I would urge anyone who may have information, or anyone who has witnessed this, to call us."
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8716 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
