Freight crime event pulls into Heywood
Date published: 15 March 2012
An event organised to help tackle freight crime was hosted by Truckwatch North West at Heywood Distribution Park today (Thursday 15 March).
‘CSI Truckwatch: The Reality,’ attended by police officers, depot managers, transport bosses and safety chiefs, focused on reducing, recording, reporting and recognising freight crime.
The afternoon was opened by Lord Henley, Home Office Minister for Crime Prevention and Antisocial Behaviour.
Lord Henley, said: “The road freight industry plays a vital role in the life of this country, ensuring there is food and goods in our shops and that businesses and industry can function.
“Freight and truck crime therefore has a potential impact on us all.”
He added: “I would like to thank the industry, the police and partners for working together to adopt effective measures to secure drivers, vehicles and loads which is playing an important role in preventing and reducing this crime.”
A brief introduction to freight crime was delivered by June Armstrong, Chairwoman of Truckwatch North West.
Ms Armstrong, said: “The theft of large goods vehicles and their loads causes substantial economic harm to manufacturers, operators and retailers alike.
“It can also lead to unemployment as companies, particularly small and medium-sized ones, are driven out of business due to losses incurred.
“We will therefore continue to raise awareness of this problem in any way we can.”
Guests also received a presentation from PC Scott Cleworth of Greater Manchester Police.
PC Cleworth, a traffic officer, said the message he wants to send to drivers or those who think they have seen something suspicious is “tell us.” The audience also watched some video clips about stolen cargo.
Presentations were also given by GMP’s scene of crime officers and vehicle examination unit.
Advice was given on how to preserve evidence if vehicles are targeted, and crime prevention advice was given to help drivers to avoid becoming victims of this type of offence.
