Councillors offer backing for Portas Pilot bid
Date published: 08 March 2012
Rochdale Township councillors have offered their support to the town’s Portas Pilot bid.
At a meeting of the Township on Wednesday night, Chairman of the newly formed Rochdale High Street Foundation, Paul Turner Mitchell, asked councillors for their backing.
Mr Turner-Mitchell explained that whilst the potential amount of money available – a share of £1million – is not a huge amount, the prestige lies with being awarded pilot status.
He asked councillors to “show their commitment” to the bid.
The Township agreed to formally back the bid and said they would arrange for a letter of support to be drawn up.
Councillor Dale Mulgew highlighted that because Rochdale is the World Capital of Co-operatives that it may have a “competitive edge” over other towns.
Mr Turner-Mitchell revealed that the town’s bid would centre around the Year of Co-operation theme.
