Royal approval for military veterans’ service

Date published: 29 February 2012

Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, has given his seal of approval for the North West-wide military veterans’ service, provided by Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust.

Launched in November last year, the military veterans’ service provides support to veterans who are experiencing mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, stress, anger, substance misuse and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The military veterans’ service covers the whole North West region and applies to anyone who has served in the army, navy or air force, including the TA and reserves, as well as immediate family members who may also be affected.

In a letter to the Trust the Duke, who is serving in the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a helicopter co-pilot, showed his support for the service saying that it will provide “invaluable advice, training and other services to help members of the armed forces and their families to tackle the challenges which follow a tour of active duty.” He also wished the service every possible success in carrying out this important work.

Veterans mental health charity Combat Stress says 85 per cent of veterans are too embarrassed to admit to depression or anxiety, while one in three fail to tell their families.

“Most people who leave the armed forces make the transition to civilian life without too much difficulty but there are a number who struggle to adapt and need help,” explains Dr Alan Barrett, Principal Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Lead for the service.

“Leaving the structure and discipline of the armed forces is a big change and some veterans find it hard to adjust to being a civilian. This can create stress and worry, which over time can lead to longer term psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, anger and drug and alcohol misuse.

“We’re really pleased that Prince William has shown his support for the service and hope that it will encourage veterans who are facing problems to come forward and get help.”

Veterans and their families can choose to refer themselves to the service, or they can enquire about a referral by speaking to their local health professional.
