Micro campaigners join peace group in Yorkshire Street

Micro campaigners, created especially for the event, joined Rochdale and Littleborough Peace Group in Yorkshire Street on Saturday (25 February 2012) calling for an end to spending on the Trident nuclear weapons system. 

Their scaled-down placards called on the government to cut Trident not jobs, pensions or health services, while, members of the peace group asked Rochdale's shoppers to send postcards to their MPs asking them to stop spending money on nuclear weapons.
Philip Gilligan said: "Our micro friends and their important message very very popular across all age-groups. 

“People in Rochdale clearly realise that when we are suffering massive cuts in essential services, it is scandalous that billions are being squandered on a nuclear weapons system we do not need.

“While our jobs, pensions and well-being are all being threatened by the government's austerity measures, the final price tag for having and running the proposed replacement Trident system is £100billion. This is money that needs to be invested in useful production, real jobs for our young people and in our hospitals, schools and services for the vulnerable, not in weapons that make the world a much more dangerous place."
