New council building to be called ‘Number One Riverside’
Date published: 27 February 2012
Rochdale’s new municipal office, situated on Smith Street, is set to be named ‘Number One Riverside.’
The name for the building, which is due to be completed in December, will go before Councillors for a decision next week.
A report due before a meeting of Rochdale Township recommends the name be approved.
The report, written by Mark Widdup, Service Director, states that because the building is designed to provide a library and customer service point for residents as well as housing council staff and staff from partner organisations, its name should be something that “doesn’t signify it is exclusively a council building, that it is a building for all residents of the borough and not specifically for Rochdale Township residents.”
The report says the name should not date the building, be too long, be too narrow or literal and support current and future marketing opportunities.
The report concludes: “With these considerations in mind it is proposed that the name should reflect the geography of the area and should be a neutral name focused on the address. Therefore the name Number One Riverside is proposed.”
