Man, 25, hit by train

A 25-year-old man is in hospital after being struck by a train between Rochdale and Smithy Bridge.
 
The incident, which isn’t being treated as suspicious, was reported to police shortly after 9.00pm last night (Saturday 18 February).

A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service said the man has undergone partial amputation of his foot.

His condition is described as stable.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: "BTP can confirm that a male has been injured after being struck by a train at Smithy Bridge, Rochdale, Lancashire on Saturday 18 February, 2012.

"Officers from BTP and Greater Manchester Police attended the incident, which was reported to police at 21.07 hours, and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

"Paramedics from the Greater Manchester Ambulance Service also attended and the man was taken to North Manchester Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.”

The train involved was the 07.37pm Leeds to Manchester Victoria Service.

Trains between Rochdale and Hebden Bridge were delayed because of the incident.

A post on the National Rail website timed at 9.19pm read: “A person has been hit by a train between Rochdale and Smithybridge.

“Because of this trains between Rochdale and Hebden Bridge may be delayed by upto 60 minutes.”

An updated post, added: “A normal service is expected to run in the morning between Rochdale and Hebden Bridge following a person having been hit by a train between Rochdale and Smithy Bridge.”
