PE:
This week has been a fantastic week for sports results in the St Cuthbert's PE Department. In terms of football results we have had two teams representing our school on two separate occasions. Firstly the under 14 team played against St Paul's (Wythenshawe) on Monday in the Greater Manchester County Cup Quarter-final and after a very tough game, they progressed through to the semi-final via a win after extra-time (4-3 on penalties). This was particular pleasing for the boys as this was a team that beat us twice last year in two different competitions. Building on the confidence achieved from this result, the boys then went to the Rochdale schools 5-a-side finals at Falinge Park High School on Wednesday. Out of the four games played, our pupils won all four and did not concede a single goal all night. Another superb result for our year nine boys.
Not to be out done by the year nines, the year eleven team represented our school in the quarter final of the Greater Manchester Catholic Schools Cup competition against a very strong Our Lady's (Blackley) side. Continuing their impressive season to date, the boys performed very well in a very physical and closely contested game. After leading at half time 1-0, the boys went on to win the game 3-2, with Phil Tompos saving a penalty part-way through the second half. This was a fantastic result for the boys against a heavily favoured team to win the competition. The boys then went into a second game on Wednesday in the Greater Manchester County Cup quarter final versus Manchester Grammar School. It was clear that the previous game had taken a lot out of the team and there were some very heavy legs running around in the first half. The opposition, although not physically intimidating, were a very technical team and they worked our boys hard in the first half, which finished 0-0. After a little pep talk at half time, the team came out fighting and in the second half commanded the game creating multiple chances but not managing to score the decisive goal. As the game neared the end, Dale Taylor was brought off the bench to freshen up the attack and with the last kick of the game Adam Wright hit a shot from outside the area which rebounded off the post for Dale to head into the back of the net. The boys then closed the game to ensure St Cuthbert's now have two teams in the semi-finals of the county cup, a fantastic achievement for the boys. Just a special mention to Dylan Kay who was excellent at the back on his debut for the year 11 team!
With regards to girls football, the under 14's girls have qualified for the Rochdale Schools 5-a-side finals which will be held at Falinge Park High School on Wednesday 8th February. They put in some very strong performances to progress and we wish them luck for the finals.
Outside of football, a mixture of key stage 3 boys and girls represented our school at the first Rochdale Schools Volleyball competition which was held at Falinge Park. Even though this was their first competition, the pupils worked really well together and put in some very good performances to beat opposing schools that had a lot more volleyball experience. A massive congratulations to the team, they are listed below:
Alicja Kolkowska, Romanova Kristina, Lucy Lucketti, Katie Davies, Maisie Orman, Jacob Robinson, Akusile Makawa, Tom Hughes, Jack Green, Alex Mellor, Luke Fleming
Year 7 Humanities:
Year 7 students completed work on the Roman Empire in their History lessons. They were then given a homework in which they had to create a Roman Shield. This competition tied into their Enterprise skills - they had to be creative and work independently on a challenging task. This homework was completed to such a high standard that the History department thought it was only right that they showcase their talents at assembly. All students were asked to bring their shields in on Friday morning; they all received applause from their peers then instead of walking out of assembly, marched out while music from Ben Hur played in the background.
It was wonderful to celebrate the success of the students and to be able to congratulate them all on their outstanding efforts.
Year 7 News:
Congratulations to Ethan Kershaw form 7.9 the weekly winner for the “You have to be in to win” competition.
Well done to Mrs Davies and form 7.7 who won this weeks weekly attendance challenge with98 %
Year 7 Assembly:
With chilling cries, grunts, stamping feet and contorted faces, St. Cuthbert’s students made a high-spirited start to preparations for the arrival of the Olympic Torch at the school next month, as part of special celebrations linked to the Games.
Led by the Diocese of Salford, the “Relay of Prayer” brings together 214 Catholic schools across the North-West, each representing a different Olympic participating country.
At their year assembly, Form 7:8 of St Cuthbert’s RC Business and Enterprise College, led the party for their nominated nation, New Zealand, by performing a Haka war dance.
Made famous by the New Zealand Rugby team, this ancient Maori dance includes scaring the enemy by showing the whites of the eyes and poking out the tongue, but is also used to welcome distinguished guests.
The event kick-started competitions in which students from each school taking part in the “Relay of Prayer” have the chance to design a poster detailing the religions of their chosen nation. Lucky successful participants from each school will attend a finalists’ ceremony at Sports City.
A spokesperson for St. Cuthbert’s said: “There is a real air of anticipation, as students will be spending the next six weeks putting together their competition entries in an attempt to be the lucky winner, and preparing themselves for the arrival of the torch on March 27.”
Diary Dates; Thursday 9 February is the Year 8 Parents Evening.
