Key stage 4 news -SEB are following on from looking at modern art and the works of Jackson Pollock by looking at artist Mark Rothko. Rothko who was born in Russia and moved to America painted abstract pieces using layers. We also used the same style and techniques as Rothko who produced pieces that are interactive with the viewer. Our paintings in SEB have been inspired by Rothko’s use of colour schemes and smudged edges in the same way. We hope we can inspire visitors who come into school and use the meeting room. With work inspired by Pollock and Rothko, maybe the meeting room should be renamed the “The Tate Redwood Modern Meeting Room”. SEB have been on a visit to the resource centre to buy some creative delights for their class, including art supplies to get their hands messy. The MANTRA group have been working together this week and looking at different tools they use in the workshop. They also completed their first online assessment this week and all pupils passed the test, the marks ranged from 71% up to 83% so well done everyone. The textiles group have started some weave designs, they are looking good so far.

6th form news -In Maths students have been working on the Life and Living modules about money. Maths in 6th Form is taught at three different grades and students have been working at their own ability level. At grade one, students have been identifying money and using it in realistic situations. At grade two students are working out the cost and the change needed for low priced items and at grade three they are estimating and calculating totals and change for higher cost items. Maths tutor, Michele said “Students have been working hard and are eager to practice in real situations. They particularly like using the vending machine in 6th form and going to the shops.” With only just over 6 months to go for the London Olympic 2012, 6th Form has been getting ready for the celebrations to begin. In Performing Arts this term groups 4, 5 and 6 have started work on the 2012 Olympic Games. They have been looking at ceremonies and celebrations using, music, movement, mime and sensory tactile props and costumes. The groups have taken inspiration from a montage from the Beijing Olympics titled “One Moment in Time” and started work on their own. Adele said “All three groups have been working really hard so far and were full of enthusiasm and excitement about doing our bit for the country.”
