Review: The Royal Toby Restaurant

Date published: 23 January 2012

The Royal Toby Restaurant, Manchester Road, Castleton.

Visited Friday 19 January 2012 (early diner 5.00pm – 7.00pm).

An English Restaurant with a large bar and lounge area and dining room.

The bar area has a real fire, making the bar feel really welcoming. The seating is a mixture of comfortable benches, winged backed arm chairs and stools. The atmosphere is very relaxed. We had a dry white wine and a fresh orange.

We arrived just before 5.00pm for an early dinner before heading off to the theatre.

For the early dinner at a fixed price there is a choice of 3 starters.

We chose crispy duck salad with honey and toasted sesame seeds.
This was really fresh and full of flavour.

There was a choice of five main courses, one of which was a vegetarian option.

We went for the 8oz rump steak for an extra £1.50. All the meals are served with a choice of French fries, jacket potatoes or new potatoes with garden peas. We chose fries.

The steak was perfectly cooked, tender and delicious, the fries were fresh and crispy, mushrooms served in a separate bowl with peas.

We didn’t have a dessert as we were going on to the theatre, but we both fancied the winter crumble with custard, just what you need on a cold night.

The service was very good, with experienced waitresses who gave a warm welcome to regular diners who arrived using their first names.

This wasn’t our first visit to the restaurant and we would agree with their website which says ‘serving only the very best in English menus where consistency, quality and traditional values come first’, which is something we would agree with.

There is plenty of well lit parking for both able-bodied and disabled customers.
