Art students add colour to hospital

The children’s outpatients department at Fairfield General Hospital has been given a splash of colour thanks to art students at Rochdale Sixth Form College.

Led by art teacher Steph Green, a group of forty 16 and 17-year-old Art and Design A Level students created a series of large scale images, more than 5ft by 4ft in size, following an appeal from staff at the children’s outpatient department to help brighten up the waiting room and corridor.

The artwork features children’s favourite, Sulley, from Monsters Inc.

Steph Green, said: “This was a great opportunity for Rochdale Sixth Form College to reach out to the community and get involved in a project that means a lot to the students.

“It was a privilege to work with the staff at the hospital and also a good chance for the students to create some larger scale installations.

“We hope that the paintings put a smile on the faces of those who pass through the waiting room.”

Sister Margaret Larner said: “We have children of all ages visiting our department, and we wanted to brighten their environment up, not just with baby and toddler pictures, but also something for the older children to look at and engage with.

“Artwork can be a great distraction in taking away some of the children’s worry in visiting the department.

“The pictures are fantastic, really bright and colourful, and are already receiving a lot of positive feedback from our young patients and their parents.  The nursing and medical staff would like to thank Steph and her talented students for all their hard work.”
