Catering students raise money for hospice

Date published: 21 January 2012

A group of entry level catering students from Hopwood Hall College visited Springhill Hospice at Christmas bearing gifts.

The trip was as part of the students’ introduction to the catering industry, where they learn how a charitable organisation operates its catering.

Prior to their visit the students decided that they wanted to raise some money for the hospice so they set about making a delicious selection of decorated cupcakes, selling them to College staff and students to raise money.

In addition to this, they also helped their tutor to create a novelty Christmas cake to present as a gift to the hospice.

At the hospice they were given a tour of the kitchens and a talk from Julie Halliwell, Events Coordinator.

Tutor Julie Jones said: “The hospice requires a staggering £3 million every year to keep running and, fortunately, they just about manage to raise this amount from lots of volunteers and fund raising events.

“We all thoroughly enjoyed the visit and gained some useful information about the hospice.

“Money raised by the group came to £72.50 and we received a lovely letter from Julie thanking them for their kind donation.

“The lady who won the raffle for the Christmas cake was delighted with her prize.

“The students enjoyed their visit enormously and we hope to do this each Christmas to help the hospice to survive and keep its doors open.”
