Tributes have been paid to a grandmother who died after she and her husband were struck by a car on a zebra crossing in Shaw.
Lynn Steele, 63, was walking hand in hand with husband Raymond, 65, across Crompton Way, at its junction with Milnrow Road, when they were in collision with a blue Toyota Yaris at 3.05pm on Monday.
The couple, who moved to Shaw from Rochdale just six months ago, were taken to hospital with head injuries but Mrs Steele died a short time later.
Mr Steele was transferred to Salford Royal and remains in a serious condition.
The elderly woman driver was put into a neck brace and placed on a stretcher, but was not hurt.
The couple’s daughter Sarah paid tribute to her mother who stayed active by swimming, cycling and walking and was a keen FC United fan.
She said: “She was young at heart and will be sadly missed by all of her family.”
Iltaf Hussain, owner of Taff’s newsagent in Milnrow Road, was the first on the scene.
He said: “I was walking to my shop when I heard a bang.
“I turned around, ran over to the crossing and then ran back to the shop to call the police and ambulance.
“This crossing is a real accident spot.
“Also the sun was very low in the sky so it may have been difficult to see the couple crossing.”
Mr Hussain said there had been many accidents on the same stretch of road and said better traffic measures were needed.
He said: “They need to put a green man crossing here.”
No arrests have been made but investigations are ongoing.
Witnesses should call 0161-856 8473.
